Renowned actress Jaya Bhattacharya, who starred in films such “Devdas” and “Mimi,” as well as TV dramas including “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi” and “Thapki Pyaar Ki,” is poised to enthral viewers once more. She will be playing a multifarious role on Sun Neo’s just debuted sitcom “Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya.” Jaya portrays the stepmother of the male lead Kartik, Aashish Dixit, Urmila. Deeper facets of Urmila’s character will show themselves as the plot develops.
Often known for her hostile parts, Jaya Bhattacharya recently came clean about her seven-year break from the business. She said, “It seems as though the word ‘negative’ is etched on my forehead. Up to now, my career has presented more negative roles to give. Payal from “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi,” was the first negative character I performed that gained notoriety; others said I could not perform any other parts. I thus missed seven years of labour.
She went on, “I started having periods of uncertainty about my abilities, wondering whether I am an actor or not. Do others not believe I can also fulfil other roles? I thereby chose not to work for seven years. An artist would be delighted and satisfied if they could play several roles and project a whole character. Should such roles be presented, the artist becomes bored since nothing to apply for.
Jaya underlined the need of diversity in roles as well, saying, “For instance, Gulshan Grover brings in diverse tastes and flavours in his roles. Only then when a variety is shown is the character known and finds a position among the audience. Should the same thing be repeated without freshness in the character, how long will the actor be able to defend their positions? Artists should have the materials to satisfy their appetite for presenting their best foot forward. Sun Neo’s “Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya” has good character, which makes me glad.
The moving family drama “Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya” centres Vaishnavi, an orphan who honours Chhathi Maiyya, played by Brinda Dahal, as her mother. First to feature the revered Goddess Chhathi Maiyya on Hindi television, a divinity mostly revered in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, is the show. Emphasising faith and loyalty to Chhathi Maiyya, who shields and guides her followers across life, the story honours the victory of good over evil.
Among the outstanding cast of the show are Devoleena Bhattacharjee, Sara Khan, Jaya Bhattacharya, Vrinda Dahal, and Aashish Dixit. Sun Neo runs “Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya” Monday through Saturday at 7 PM.
